When the plumbing has to move in Chicagoland

Moving a kitchen sink is mostly about the drain: it needs slope, a vent and a path back to the stack. We plan that route first, then run new supply lines and get the work inspected before the walls and floor close up in your Chicagoland home.

Drain too far from the stack

Every foot of horizontal drain needs fall toward the stack. When the new spot is far away, we check that the pipe can keep its slope without dropping below the floor framing.

Sink moved under a window

Putting the sink under a window is a common request. The drain and vent have to work around the window framing, and supply lines stay off the cold outside wall when possible.

Pot filler over the range

Filling stock pots at the stove means a supply line in the range wall with a shut-off you can reach. We run it before the backsplash goes up.

Old pipes found once the wall is open

Behind many sink walls is pipe that has been there for decades. While it is exposed, replacing it is far easier than coming back later.

Adding a prep or bar sink

Bar and prep sinks need the same drain, vent and water as a full sink. We find the shortest path back to the plumbing you already have.

New fridge spot with no water

Moving the refrigerator is easy; moving its water is plumbing. We bring a dedicated line to the new spot so nothing runs across the floor.

Island sink with no wall to vent into

A sink in an island has no wall behind it for a vent pipe. We solve that with a loop vent under the counter, tied back into the house venting the way the plumbing code requires.

Dishwasher on the wrong side of the sink

Moving the dishwasher to the other side of the sink means a new drain connection, a new supply line and often a new electrical feed. We handle the plumbing side and coordinate the rest.

What the install includes

  • Layout and route checkA visit to trace the stack, the vent and the path from the old sink to the new spot.
  • Permit applicationPermit paperwork handled before the first pipe is cut.
  • Shut-off and removalWater shut off, old supply lines capped and the abandoned drain sealed properly.
  • New drain at the right slopeThe new drain is pitched, supported and joined to the existing line.
  • VentingEvery relocated fixture gets a vent so the trap holds its seal.
  • Water supply linesPEX or copper hot and cold lines with new shut-off valves at the sink.
  • Dishwasher, fridge and pot filler linesBranch lines for the dishwasher, the ice maker and a pot filler if you want one.

What to pick before the install

Cleanouts at the new drainAn accessible cleanout near the relocated sink so a future clog can be cleared without opening the cabinet floor.
Quarter-turn shut-off valvesEasy-to-use valves so any fixture can be isolated without shutting off the house.
PVC drain and vent pipePlastic drain pipe that resists grease buildup better than old galvanized.
PEX supply linesFlexible water lines that run in long pieces with few fittings inside the wall.
Loop ventThe traditional way to vent an island sink without a wall behind it.

Kitchen Plumbing Relocation across Chicagoland

The same job looks different in a 1920s bungalow, a 1970s split-level and a new subdivision. Here is what we plan for in different parts of the region.

Prewar towns

Cast-iron stack in an older home

Older Berwyn and Evanston homes often have a cast-iron stack and galvanized branches. Tying a new drain into old cast iron takes the right couplings and a check of the pipe around it.

An Elk Grove Village postwar Cape Cod: before and after

This one is a postwar Cape Cod in Elk Grove Village. Before: stainless double sink and 1970s dark pecan-stained cabinets. The reason for the call: no room to prep near the sink. The result: a new island with a prep sink, the drain, vent and water lines relocated from the old wall. On site this meant permit application, shut-off and removal, plus dishwasher, fridge and pot filler lines.

Install questions

How far can a sink move from the drain?
There is no single number; what matters is keeping the drain sloped and properly vented all the way to the stack.
How long does a kitchen plumbing relocation take?
A simple move can be done in a day or two; slab cutting or long runs take longer.
Do I need a permit to move a kitchen sink in Chicagoland?
Moving or adding drain and water lines usually needs a village plumbing permit and an inspection. We take care of the application.
Can you do the plumbing if another company does the cabinets?
Yes. We coordinate with your remodeler so the rough-in is done before cabinets and the final hookup after the counters.
What affects the price of moving kitchen plumbing?
Basement versus slab, the length of the run and how many fixtures move drive the price. You get a line-item estimate after we see it.
Which towns do you serve?
Chicago and 49 suburbs, from Naperville and Aurora to Evanston, Schaumburg and Orland Park. Pick your town below for local details and ZIP codes.
