Layout problems we solve in Plainfield kitchens

Good kitchen design in Plainfield starts with a tape measure and a list of what annoys you every day. We draw the layout, place the appliances, plan storage and lighting, and show you 3D views before a single cabinet is ordered.

Appliances chosen too late

A range or refrigerator picked after the cabinets are ordered often won't fit. We build the plan around the model numbers you choose, with the right openings, power, gas and venting.

Sink and range on the same wall

One long wall with everything on it leaves almost no prep space between the stations. We consider an island or peninsula that takes one station, or a longer run with a clear prep zone.

Corners and dead storage

If you own more containers than you can find, the storage plan is wrong. We assign each zone its drawers, pull-outs and pantry space before choosing doors.

The work triangle doesn't work

Sink on one end, range on the other and the fridge around a corner means miles of walking per meal. A redrawn plan keeps each leg of the triangle short and out of the traffic path.

Narrow galley kitchen

We work galley kitchens hard: shallow pantry cabinets, cabinets to the ceiling, a counter-depth fridge and, where a wall allows, an opening to the next room.

No room for an island

If an island would block the dishwasher or the fridge door, we draw alternatives: a peninsula, a counter-height table or a run extended along another wall.

Aisles that are too tight or too wide

An island crammed into a room that can't take it is worse than no island. We measure the clearances first and size the island, or a peninsula, to fit.

Doorways and traffic through the kitchen

Too many doors make a kitchen hard to lay out. Sometimes moving or closing one opening frees a full wall of cabinets.

Finishes and options

Galley layoutTwo parallel runs, efficient for one cook and very common in older homes and condos.
Two-tone and wood accentsA painted perimeter with a wood or darker island adds depth without busy finishes.
U-shaped layoutCabinets on three sides, a good choice for a closed kitchen where one cook does most of the work.
Shaker and slab cabinet stylesThe two door styles we draw most often, shown in 3D in your colors.
L-shaped layout with an islandTwo perpendicular runs plus an island, which works well when the room is open on one side.

Plainfield kitchen, 2000s two-story with an open kitchen: kitchen design & layout planning

This one is a 2000s two-story with an open kitchen in Plainfield. Before: cherry-stained shaker cabinets, dark green-black granite and stainless appliances. What bothered the owners most: no place to sit and too little storage. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in pale sage, creamy quartzite-look quartz counters and black cage pendants and slim recessed lights. On site this meant site measurement, layout options, plus lighting and electrical plan.

Bolingbrook kitchen, 1980s two-story: kitchen design & layout planning

This one is a 1980s two-story near Colonial Village. Before: honey-oak cathedral raised-panel cabinets with worn finish near the handles, brass knobs, almond laminate with a backsplash lip and almond appliances. The main complaint was cabinets and a layout that no longer fit how they cook. The result: a new layout with an island, cabinets in white uppers and dusty blue lowers, warm walnut butcher block counters and recessed lights and under-cabinet LED strips. Work included cabinet and storage layout, 3D views, plus material selections.

The site: a 1990s two-story colonial in Woodridge. The kitchen as it was: white thermofoil cabinets peeling at the edges, oak trim, white ceramic tile with dark stained grout lines and white appliances. The reason for the call: cabinets and a layout that no longer fit how they cook. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in terracotta, charcoal concrete-look quartz counters and a flush drum fixture and under-cabinet lights. On site this meant site measurement, lighting and electrical plan, plus 3D views.

Kitchen Design & Layout Planning questions from Plainfield homeowners

Do you build the kitchen you design?
Yes. The plan, the estimate and the construction all come from us, with one point of contact.
How long does the design take?
Usually a few weeks. Choosing appliances and finishes quickly is what keeps it moving.
Do I need a designer if I already know what I want?
Knowing your style is half of it. The other half is clearances, appliance specs and storage, and that is what our plan nails down.
Do I need drawings for a permit in Plainfield?
Cosmetic changes often need no permit; moving walls, adding circuits or relocating plumbing usually does. We check the village's requirements and draw what they ask for.
How much does kitchen design cost?
The scope sets the price, from a simple cabinet layout to full drawings with 3D views and permit sets. You'll get the number in writing before we start.
Do I need a Plainfield-registered contractor for kitchen design?
Village business license ($25 annually) applies to corporate, retail and home businesses. We take care of that before work starts.
Which Plainfield homes do you most often see for kitchen design?
In Plainfield we see Greek Revival and Upright and Wing cottages. Each comes with its own walls, wiring and plumbing, and we plan the job around them.
What is the Plainfield building department phone number?
Permits go through Village of Plainfield Building & Code Enforcement, phone (815) 439-2937. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Do you work in my part of Plainfield?
Yes. Our crews work across Plainfield — ZIP 60544, 60585, 60586, 60543 — and nearby Bolingbrook, Naperville, Aurora.

Working in Plainfield

  • Most Plainfield homes are single-family. We protect floors and driveways and leave the site clean every day.
  • Live in the Downtown Historic District? Interior kitchen work is usually not reviewed. We check before anything touches the exterior.
