Layout problems we solve in Woodridge kitchens

We plan kitchens for Woodridge homeowners who want the room to work better, not just look newer. You get measured drawings, an appliance plan, a cabinet layout and 3D views, and because we also build kitchens, the plan is one we know can be built.

A 1970s layout with a peninsula and soffits

Many 1970s kitchens have a peninsula that blocks the dining area and soffits that eat the top of the wall. We check what's inside the soffits and whether the peninsula can open up or turn into an island.

Condo kitchen with fixed plumbing

Condo kitchens have more constraints but the same goals. We confirm the riser and vent locations and plan the cabinets and appliances around them.

Aisles that are too tight or too wide

An island crammed into a room that can't take it is worse than no island. We measure the clearances first and size the island, or a peninsula, to fit.

No landing space next to appliances

If you have to turn around to put anything down when the oven door is open, the landing areas are missing. We plan counter space exactly where hands need it.

Corners and dead storage

If you own more containers than you can find, the storage plan is wrong. We assign each zone its drawers, pull-outs and pantry space before choosing doors.

Lighting and outlets planned as an afterthought

Lighting placed after the cabinets are in leaves shadows on every counter. We draw recessed lights, pendants and under-cabinet strips on the same plan as the cabinets.

Doorways and traffic through the kitchen

Kids heading for the fridge and the dog heading for the yard shouldn't cross in front of the stove. We plan the layout around how people move through the room.

A layout that no longer fits how you live

Families change and kitchens usually don't. We ask who cooks, who sits, where mail and backpacks land, and design zones for each.

Everything in a kitchen design

  • Site measurementA full measure of the room, plus where the drain, gas line, duct and panel sit.
  • Needs and habits interviewA conversation about your routine, your storage and your wish list, written down as the brief.
  • Layout optionsTwo or three layout concepts, such as an L with an island, a U or a galley, compared side by side.
  • Appliance planAppliance sizes, clearances, hood venting and hookups confirmed against the models you pick.
  • Cabinet and storage layoutEvery cabinet, drawer, pull-out and pantry section drawn and assigned to a job.
  • Material selectionsSamples of cabinets, counters and tile reviewed together in your own light.
  • Written, itemized estimateA line-item estimate tied to the final drawings, so you see where the money goes.

Materials and options

Shaker and slab cabinet stylesThe two door styles we draw most often, shown in 3D in your colors.
Peninsula instead of an islandGives most of an island's benefits in rooms that can't spare the floor space.
Galley layoutTwo parallel runs, efficient for one cook and very common in older homes and condos.
Two-tone and wood accentsA painted perimeter with a wood or darker island adds depth without busy finishes.
L-shaped layout with an islandThe most common plan in suburban homes: two walls of cabinets and an island for prep and seating.

Woodridge kitchen, 1980s two-story: kitchen design & layout planning

This one is a 1980s two-story in Woodridge. Before: white thermofoil cabinets peeling at the edges, oak trim, white ceramic tile with dark stained grout lines and white appliances. The main complaint was cabinets and a layout that no longer fit how they cook. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in terracotta, charcoal concrete-look quartz counters and a flush drum fixture and under-cabinet lights. Work included appliance plan, cabinet and storage layout, plus written, itemized estimate.

Before and after: a 1950s ranch in Downers Grove

A 1950s ranch near Shady Lane Estates, a typical kitchen for Downers Grove. What we started with: 1970s dark pecan-stained cabinets, light beige laminate and white appliances. What bothered the owners most: a kitchen closed off from the rest of the house. After: a new layout with an island, cabinets in light greige uppers and muted blue lowers, black honed granite counters and two glass pendants and recessed lights. On site this meant layout options, appliance plan, plus cabinet and storage layout.

Lisle kitchen, two-story colonial from the 1990s: kitchen design & layout planning

This one is a two-story colonial from the 1990s near The Meadows. What we started with: golden-oak cabinets with oak soffits above, white Corian-style solid surface with a yellowed seam and black appliances. What bothered the owners most: no place to sit and too little storage. The result: a new layout with an island, cabinets in light warm taupe, warm walnut butcher block counters and recessed lights and under-cabinet LED strips. Kitchen Design & Layout Planning questions from Woodridge homeowners

Can you design a condo kitchen?
Yes. We confirm what the association allows and where the risers and vents are, then design within those limits.
Do you build the kitchen you design?
We do. Design and construction under one roof means the drawings are checked by the people who will build them.
How long does the design take?
Usually a few weeks. Choosing appliances and finishes quickly is what keeps it moving.
Do I choose appliances before the cabinets?
Pick them first, or at least their sizes. The cabinet plan depends on them.
Can I just use a free kitchen design app?
Bring your app sketches; they help us understand what you like. We then check them against real dimensions, appliance specs and what's inside the walls.
Do Woodridge condo associations need to approve kitchen design?
Associations usually set rules for work hours, elevators, deliveries and insurance, and many require approval for plumbing, electrical or structural changes. We provide the certificate of insurance and follow the building's rules.
Do I need a Woodridge-registered contractor for kitchen design?
Contractors register with the Village at no fee; a certificate of insurance naming the Village is required before a permit is issued ($100,000/$300,000 public liability, $50,000 property damage). We take care of that before work starts.
Woodridge building permit for kitchen design: where do I apply?
Permits go through Village of Woodridge Community Development Department (Building Permits), phone 630-719-4750. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
What kind of Woodridge homes do you work in?
In Woodridge we see Most homes built after the 1950s. Each comes with its own walls, wiring and plumbing, and we plan the job around them.
Do I need a permit for kitchen design in Woodridge?
It depends on the scope. Woodridge's rule in short: Permits are required for alterations that move or add walls, and for all electrical and plumbing work (and all HVAC work). We handle the permit when one is needed with Village of Woodridge Community Development Department (Building Permits).
Do you work in my part of Woodridge?
Yes. Our crews work across Woodridge, including Seven Bridges, The Ridge — ZIP 60517, 60439 — and nearby Downers Grove, Lisle, Bolingbrook.
