Island and peninsula problems we solve in Woodridge

Whether you are adding a first island, replacing a small one or turning a wall into a peninsula with stools, the job is part carpentry, part trades. Our Woodridge crew handles the cabinets, the floor anchoring, wiring, any plumbing and the countertop in one schedule.

Dated peninsula with a half wall

Many 1970s kitchens have a peninsula topped with a knee wall or hanging cabinets. Removing them opens the view and leaves a clean seating counter.

Concrete floor in a condo

Condo kitchens often sit on a concrete slab, which makes island power and plumbing harder. We plan routes the building allows or suggest a peninsula fed from a wall.

Want a sink in the island

Moving the sink to the island lets you face the room while you work. It needs a drain path and a vent that meets the plumbing code, usually a loop vent run inside the island.

Island that wobbles or shifts

If the island moves or rocks, it was never anchored. We secure a new base to the floor framing before the top goes on.

Cracked overhang on a stone top

If your bar top has a crack near the edge, it likely lacked support. New tops get hidden steel or visible corbels.

Island too small to be useful

A narrow builder island or a rolling cart holds a fruit bowl and little else. We replace it with a larger island sized to the room's clearances.

No place to sit in the kitchen

If everyone stands around while you cook, a seating side on an island or peninsula gives them a place without blocking the work zone.

Island in the dark

One ceiling light over the island leaves shadows on the work surface. We add pendants on their own switch and dimmer.

What the project covers

  • Layout and clearance checkTaped outlines on the floor so you can walk around the island before anything is ordered.
  • Floor prepWe repair the floor under the footprint and install cleats or blocking to fasten the base.

  • Panels and seating sideFinished end and back panels, with knee space and furniture details where you want them.
  • Overhang supportSteel brackets, support plates or corbels for seating overhangs on stone tops.

Materials and options

Legs, corbels and bracketsFurniture legs or corbels support overhangs and give the island a built-in look.
Counter or bar height seatingCounter height keeps one continuous surface; a raised bar hides prep clutter from the room.
Island cabinetsStock, semi-custom or custom bases in a matching or contrasting finish.
Waterfall endsThe countertop continues down the sides of the island to the floor for a clean modern look.
Butcher blockWood tops add warmth and are pleasant for prep; they need oiling or sealing from time to time.

Kitchen Island & Peninsula Installation in a two-story colonial from the 1990s, Woodridge

The site: a two-story colonial from the 1990s near Seven Bridges. What we started with: golden-oak cabinets with oak soffits above and white Corian-style solid surface with a yellowed seam. The reason for the call: no central counter for prep and seating. After: a new island in dusty blue with a dark soapstone-look quartz top and seating. On site this meant layout and clearance check, panels and seating side, plus overhang support.

Kitchen Island & Peninsula Installation questions from Woodridge homeowners

Will my floor hold a stone island?
Most residential floors carry a typical stone island without trouble. For very large slabs we check the framing from below and add blocking if needed.
How much overhang do I need for seating?
A seating overhang of roughly 12–15 inches works for most people; allow around 24 inches of counter per stool.
How much does it cost to add a kitchen island?
A plain island with an outlet costs far less than one with a sink and dishwasher. We measure and send a line-item quote.
How much space do I need for a kitchen island?
Plan on about 42 inches of walkway around the island, or 48 inches if two people cook often. Subtract those aisles from the room to see how large the island can be.
Island or peninsula — which is better?
An island needs walkways on every side; a peninsula attaches to a wall or cabinet run and needs fewer. In smaller kitchens a peninsula often works better.
Woodridge building permit for island project: where do I apply?
Permits go through Village of Woodridge Community Development Department (Building Permits), phone 630-719-4750. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
What does Woodridge ask for on electrical work?
Electrical contractors must hold an Illinois municipal electrical license in good standing and post a $10,000 surety bond payable to the Village. New circuits and wiring are done by licensed electricians.
Which Woodridge homes do you most often see for island project?
In Woodridge we see Most homes built after the 1950s. Each comes with its own walls, wiring and plumbing, and we plan the job around them.
Do I need a Woodridge-registered contractor for island project?
Contractors register with the Village at no fee; a certificate of insurance naming the Village is required before a permit is issued ($100,000/$300,000 public liability, $50,000 property damage). We take care of that before work starts.
Does Woodridge require a licensed plumber for island project?
Plumbing contractors must hold a State of Illinois plumbing license (055 and 058); a copy of the plumber's photo ID license is required. Our plumbing connections are made by licensed plumbers.
Do I need a permit for island project in Woodridge?
It depends on the scope. Woodridge's rule in short: Permits are required for alterations that move or add walls, and for all electrical and plumbing work (and all HVAC work). We handle the permit when one is needed with Village of Woodridge Community Development Department (Building Permits).
