Island and peninsula problems we solve in Naperville

Most Naperville homeowners want the same three things from an island: more counter space, a place to sit and extra storage. We plan the size around the room, run the electrical the code usually calls for, and suggest a peninsula when an island would crowd the kitchen.

Dated peninsula with a half wall

Many 1990s kitchens have a peninsula topped with a knee wall or hanging cabinets. Removing them opens the view and leaves a clean seating counter.

Island that wobbles or shifts

A freestanding island that slides when you lean on it isn't safe for stone. We fasten the base to the floor with cleats so it stays put.

Want the cooktop in the island

If you want to cook facing the room, we plan the island around the cooktop, the ventilation path and safe space on both sides.

Aisles too tight around the island

If two people can't pass each other between the island and the counters, the walkway is short. We rework the footprint so traffic flows.

Small kitchen with no room for an island

When the room can't spare aisles on all sides, a peninsula gives you seating and counter space attached to an existing run.

No place to sit in the kitchen

If everyone stands around while you cook, a seating side on an island or peninsula gives them a place without blocking the work zone.

Clutter with no storage

Counters full of things that have nowhere to go? Island drawers and pull-outs give them a home.

Island in the dark

Pendant lights over the island light the prep area and define the space. We wire them while the ceiling is open.

Everything in a island project

  • Layout and clearance checkTaped outlines on the floor so you can walk around the island before anything is ordered.
  • Electrical rough-inPower routed through the floor or from an adjacent wall, with boxes placed for outlets and lights.
  • Plumbing and ventingDrain, vent and supply lines for an island sink or dishwasher, run by licensed trades.
  • Island cabinets set and anchoredWe set the island boxes level, join them and fasten them down.

Choices you'll make

Pop-up and side outletsWe place outlets where code allows and where they won't be in a spill zone.
Island cabinetsStock, semi-custom or custom bases in a matching or contrasting finish.
Waterfall endsThe countertop continues down the sides of the island to the floor for a clean modern look.
Butcher blockWood tops add warmth and are pleasant for prep; they need oiling or sealing from time to time.
Quartz and granite topsStone tops give a large, durable work surface; long islands may need a seam or a single large slab.

Kitchen Island & Peninsula Installation questions from Naperville homeowners

Will my floor hold a stone island?
Usually yes. We look at the joists when the island is large or sits mid-span and reinforce if anything seems marginal.
Do I need a permit to add an island?
If the island gets new wiring or plumbing, usually yes. A simple cabinet island without utilities often doesn't. We check the Naperville rules.
Should the island be fixed or freestanding?
Most islands we install are fixed so they can carry stone and power safely; freestanding units are lighter and simpler.
Can you add a sink to a kitchen island?
Usually. We check how the drain can reach the island and how it will be vented before designing around a sink.
How much does it cost to add a kitchen island?
A plain island with an outlet costs far less than one with a sink and dishwasher. We measure and send a line-item quote.
What is the Naperville building department phone number?
Permits go through Transportation, Engineering and Development (TED) Business Group, Building Permits, phone (630) 420-6100, Option 2. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Does Naperville require a licensed plumber for island project?
City guide lists plumbers among trades that require a license; plumbing pipe/fixture work needs a permit. Our plumbing connections are made by licensed plumbers.
What kind of Naperville homes do you work in?
In Naperville we see historic district homes from the 1800s and rapid suburban growth 1960s-1990s. Each comes with its own walls, wiring and plumbing, and we plan the job around them.
Does Naperville require a licensed electrician for island project?
City guide says electricians must be licensed; it advises insisting on seeing a current license. New circuits and wiring are done by licensed electricians.
Do I need a permit for island project in Naperville?
It depends on the scope. Naperville's rule in short: Remodeling such as kitchens requires a permit, as do electrical work (minor repairs and low-voltage excepted), plumbing pipe/fixture installation or rearrangement, and structural changes. We handle the permit when one is needed with Transportation, Engineering and Development (TED) Business Group, Building Permits.

Yes. Our crews work across Naperville, including Downtown Naperville, Highlands, Tamarack — ZIP 60540, 60563, 60564, 60565 — and nearby Lisle, Warrenville, Bolingbrook.
