Layout problems we solve in Oak Park kitchens

Good kitchen design in Oak Park starts with a tape measure and a list of what annoys you every day. We draw the layout, place the appliances, plan storage and lighting, and show you 3D views before a single cabinet is ordered.

Small kitchen in an older Oak Park home

Older homes often have small kitchens with a pantry, a back hall or a breakfast nook next door. We look at whether borrowing one of those spaces gives the room what it needs.

Condo kitchen with fixed plumbing

Condo kitchens have more constraints but the same goals. We confirm the riser and vent locations and plan the cabinets and appliances around them.

You can't picture the finished room

Floor plans are hard to read. We show you 3D views from where you will actually stand, so you can see sight lines, island size and cabinet heights before ordering.

Sink and range on the same wall

If the sink and stove fight for the same strip of counter, we split them: a prep sink, a peninsula or a re-planned run gives each its own working space.

The work triangle doesn't work

Sink on one end, range on the other and the fridge around a corner means miles of walking per meal. A redrawn plan keeps each leg of the triangle short and out of the traffic path.

Aisles that are too tight or too wide

An island crammed into a room that can't take it is worse than no island. We measure the clearances first and size the island, or a peninsula, to fit.

Appliances chosen too late

Specs first, cabinets second. We confirm the exact appliances, their clearances and their hookups before the cabinet order is final.

No room for an island

Not every kitchen should have an island. When the clearances don't work, we look at a peninsula, a rolling cart or a narrower island that still leaves room to walk.

Everything in a kitchen design

Finishes and options

Furniture-style and inset detailsInset doors, legs on the island and a hutch-style pantry suit the trim of older Oak Park houses.
Galley layoutTwo parallel runs, efficient for one cook and very common in older homes and condos.
Peninsula instead of an islandA counter attached to one run, giving seating and prep space where a full island won't fit.
L-shaped layout with an islandTwo perpendicular runs plus an island, which works well when the room is open on one side.
Shaker and slab cabinet stylesShaker doors suit most homes; slab doors give a cleaner, modern look.

An Oak Park 1920s bungalow: before and after

This one is a 1920s bungalow in Oak Park. What we started with: 1980s honey-oak raised-panel cabinets installed over the old plaster, dark brown speckled laminate and an almond range and refrigerator. The reason for the call: a cramped layout with nowhere to prep. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in light greige uppers and muted blue lowers, creamy quartzite-look quartz counters and two glass pendants and recessed lights. Work included layout options, material selections, plus drawings for permit and construction.

Elmhurst kitchen, postwar bi-level: kitchen design & layout planning

A postwar bi-level in Elmhurst, a typical kitchen for Elmhurst. Before: dark walnut-stained flush-panel cabinets with brass pulls, speckled laminate and a built-in wall oven and a cooktop in harvest gold. The main complaint was a layout built around appliances from another era. The result: a new layout with an island, cabinets in two-tone, white quartz counters and black cage pendants and slim recessed lights. Work included needs and habits interview, cabinet and storage layout, plus 3D views.

Kitchen Design & Layout Planning questions from Oak Park homeowners

Can you design a condo kitchen?
Yes. We check association rules, fixed stacks and vent routes before drawing the layout.
Do you build the kitchen you design?
We do. Design and construction under one roof means the drawings are checked by the people who will build them.
How much space do I need for an island?
The island is the easy part; the aisles around it decide whether it works. We measure clearances to the counters, appliances and doors first.
Can I just use a free kitchen design app?
Use one to play with layouts, then let us confirm it. Most app layouts need changes once clearances and hookups are measured.
How long does the design take?
Often a few weeks from the first visit to final drawings, depending on how many revisions you want and how quickly selections are made.
Do I need a Oak Park-registered contractor for kitchen design?
Contractors must be registered with the Village and keep a valid certificate of insurance uploaded in Village View. We take care of that before work starts.
Do Oak Park condo associations need to approve kitchen design?
Associations usually set rules for work hours, elevators, deliveries and insurance, and many require approval for plumbing, electrical or structural changes. We provide the certificate of insurance and follow the building's rules.
Oak Park building permit for kitchen design: where do I apply?
Permits go through Permit & Development Division (Development Services Department), phone 708-358-5430. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Which Oak Park homes do you most often see for kitchen design?
In Oak Park we see homes built 1892-1950, Queen Anne, Prairie School and Craftsman. Each comes with its own walls, wiring and plumbing, and we plan the job around them.
Do I need a permit for kitchen design in Oak Park?
It depends on the scope. Oak Park's rule in short: Permits needed for installing new cabinets and countertops and for any extension or alteration of electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems; separate electrical and plumbing permits. We handle the permit when one is needed with Permit & Development Division (Development Services Department).
Do you work in my part of Oak Park?
Yes. Our crews work across Oak Park, including Ridgeland-Oak Park Historic District, Gunderson Historic District, Harrison Street arts district — ZIP 60302, 60304, 60301 — and nearby Berwyn, Chicago, Elmhurst.
