Layout problems we solve in Glenview kitchens

Most of what makes a kitchen work is decided on paper: where the sink sits, how wide the aisles are, which drawer holds the pots. We measure your Glenview kitchen, sketch a few layout options and refine one into drawings our crew builds from.

A 2000s layout with a peninsula and soffits

Soffits, a small peninsula and a desk nook are common in 2000s kitchens. We plan around any ducts in the soffits and reuse the nook as pantry or coffee storage.

Corners and dead storage

Half the cabinet volume in many kitchens is hard to reach: deep corners, tall uppers, shelves at the back. A drawer-first plan puts most of it within easy reach.

Sink and range on the same wall

A one-wall layout often works better once a parallel island is added for prep or cleanup. We check whether the room can hold it with comfortable aisles.

Appliances chosen too late

Appliance size drives the whole layout. We settle the fridge width, range size, hood type and dishwasher position first, then draw the cabinets around them.

Lighting and outlets planned as an afterthought

Lighting placed after the cabinets are in leaves shadows on every counter. We draw recessed lights, pendants and under-cabinet strips on the same plan as the cabinets.

The work triangle doesn't work

When the three main stations are spread out or blocked by an island, cooking turns into laps. We rearrange them so the steps between them are short and nothing cuts through the middle.

Narrow galley kitchen

We work galley kitchens hard: shallow pantry cabinets, cabinets to the ceiling, a counter-depth fridge and, where a wall allows, an opening to the next room.

Aisles that are too tight or too wide

An island crammed into a room that can't take it is worse than no island. We measure the clearances first and size the island, or a peninsula, to fit.

Choices you'll make

Two-tone and wood accentsContrasting island or lower cabinets, a look that tends to age better than one-season trends.
Peninsula instead of an islandGives most of an island's benefits in rooms that can't spare the floor space.
L-shaped layout with an islandThe most common plan in suburban homes: two walls of cabinets and an island for prep and seating.
Shaker and slab cabinet stylesThe two door styles we draw most often, shown in 3D in your colors.
Galley layoutParallel counters with a center aisle; compact and quick to work in when planned right.

Kitchen Design & Layout Planning in a postwar Cape Cod, Glenview

This one is a postwar Cape Cod near The Grove. Before: original birch cabinets painted white decades ago, sagging doors, chrome pulls, laminate with an aluminum edge band and an older white range and a white refrigerator. The reason for the call: cabinets and a layout that no longer fit how they cook. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in warm white shaker, light gray quartz counters and a flush drum fixture and under-cabinet lights. On site this meant 3D views, drawings for permit and construction, plus written, itemized estimate.

A Park Ridge postwar Cape Cod: before and after

A postwar Cape Cod in Park Ridge, a typical kitchen for Park Ridge. What we started with: dark walnut-stained flush-panel cabinets with brass pulls, speckled laminate and a built-in wall oven and a cooktop in harvest gold. The main complaint was a layout built around appliances from another era. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in two-tone, white quartz counters and black cage pendants and slim recessed lights. Work included site measurement, layout options, plus lighting and electrical plan.

Des Plaines kitchen, postwar bi-level: kitchen design & layout planning

The site: a postwar bi-level in Des Plaines. Before: 1970s dark pecan-stained cabinets, light beige laminate and white appliances. The main complaint was no place to sit and too little storage. After: a new layout with an island, cabinets in light greige uppers and muted blue lowers, black honed granite counters and two glass pendants and recessed lights. On site this meant site measurement, 3D views, plus written, itemized estimate.

Kitchen Design & Layout Planning questions from Glenview homeowners

How much does kitchen design cost?
The scope sets the price, from a simple cabinet layout to full drawings with 3D views and permit sets. You'll get the number in writing before we start.
Do I need a designer if I already know what I want?
Even with a clear picture, drawings catch problems early: a door that hits the range, an island that blocks the fridge, a hood with no duct route.
Which kitchen trends will date quickly?
Hard to predict, so we keep cabinets and counters simple and let easy-to-change items like lighting, paint and hardware carry the trend.
Do I need drawings for a permit in Glenview?
If the work needs a permit, yes. Structural changes may also need an engineer's or architect's stamp, and we coordinate that.
Do I choose appliances before the cabinets?
Pick them first, or at least their sizes. The cabinet plan depends on them.
Do I need a Glenview-registered contractor for kitchen design?
General and demolition contractors register with the Village: $50 fee, $25,000 bond, certificate of insurance and workers comp proof. Unlisted contractor types need no registration. We take care of that before work starts.
Glenview building permit for kitchen design: where do I apply?
Permits go through Community Development, Inspectional Services Division (Development Center), phone (847) 904-4330. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Do I need a permit for kitchen design in Glenview?
It depends on the scope. Glenview's rule in short: Permit required for remodeling/altering a structure, changing the number or location of plumbing fixtures or piping, and new electrical work. We handle the permit when one is needed with Community Development, Inspectional Services Division (Development Center).
Do you work in my part of Glenview?
Yes. Our crews work across Glenview, including The Park, The Glen, The Grove — ZIP 60025, 60026, 60062 — and nearby Northbrook, Park Ridge, Des Plaines.
