Layout problems we solve in Wheaton kitchens

We plan kitchens for Wheaton homeowners who want the room to work better, not just look newer. You get measured drawings, an appliance plan, a cabinet layout and 3D views, and because we also build kitchens, the plan is one we know can be built.

A 1970s layout with a peninsula and soffits

Soffits, a small peninsula and a desk nook are common in 1970s kitchens. We plan around any ducts in the soffits and reuse the nook as pantry or coffee storage.

No landing space next to appliances

A fridge jammed against a wall or a range at the very end of a run leaves you juggling dishes. Our layouts keep a stretch of counter beside every major appliance.

Doorways and traffic through the kitchen

Kids heading for the fridge and the dog heading for the yard shouldn't cross in front of the stove. We plan the layout around how people move through the room.

Narrow galley kitchen

We work galley kitchens hard: shallow pantry cabinets, cabinets to the ceiling, a counter-depth fridge and, where a wall allows, an opening to the next room.

A layout that no longer fits how you live

If the room has a desk nobody uses and no place for the kids to sit, the plan is out of date. We rethink it around your actual routine.

No room for an island

Not every kitchen should have an island. When the clearances don't work, we look at a peninsula, a rolling cart or a narrower island that still leaves room to walk.

Corners and dead storage

Blind corner cabinets swallow pots you never see again. We plan corner pull-outs, drawers that turn the corner, or simply move the run so the corner disappears.

Appliances chosen too late

Specs first, cabinets second. We confirm the exact appliances, their clearances and their hookups before the cabinet order is final.

What's included

  • Site measurementWe measure walls, windows, doors, ceiling height and the positions of plumbing, gas, vents and outlets.
  • Layout optionsTwo or three layout concepts, such as an L with an island, a U or a galley, compared side by side.
  • Appliance planWe fix the appliance list early and check each opening, circuit and duct run.
  • Lighting and electrical planAn electrical layout showing each light, switch, dimmer and outlet location.
  • 3D viewsThree-dimensional views of the room so you can check heights, sight lines and finishes.
  • Material selectionsHelp choosing door style, finish, counters, backsplash, flooring and hardware that work together.
  • Written, itemized estimateA line-item estimate tied to the final drawings, so you see where the money goes.

Choices you'll make

L-shaped layout with an islandThe most common plan in suburban homes: two walls of cabinets and an island for prep and seating.
Galley layoutParallel counters with a center aisle; compact and quick to work in when planned right.
Peninsula instead of an islandGives most of an island's benefits in rooms that can't spare the floor space.
Two-tone and wood accentsA painted perimeter with a wood or darker island adds depth without busy finishes.
Shaker and slab cabinet stylesThe two door styles we draw most often, shown in 3D in your colors.

A Wheaton 1990s two-story colonial: before and after

The site: a 1990s two-story colonial near Danada Square area. The kitchen as it was: golden-oak cabinets with oak soffits above, white Corian-style solid surface with a yellowed seam and black appliances. The main complaint was no place to sit and too little storage. After: a new layout with an island, cabinets in light warm taupe, warm walnut butcher block counters and recessed lights and under-cabinet LED strips. Work included layout options, lighting and electrical plan, plus material selections.

Kitchen Design & Layout Planning questions from Wheaton homeowners

How much space do I need for an island?
Enough for comfortable aisles all the way around. If the room comes up short, a peninsula or narrower island is often the better answer.
Do I choose appliances before the cabinets?
Yes. Appliance sizes and hookups decide the cabinet openings, so we settle the model list early in the design.
How much does kitchen design cost?
The scope sets the price, from a simple cabinet layout to full drawings with 3D views and permit sets. You'll get the number in writing before we start.
Can I just use a free kitchen design app?
Apps are great for trying ideas. They don't know where your drain, gas line and joists are, which is why we measure and check the house before finalizing a plan.
Do you build the kitchen you design?
Yes. We are a design-build contractor, so the same team that draws the plan orders the cabinets and builds it.
Wheaton building permit for kitchen design: where do I apply?
Permits go through Building & Code Enforcement Department, phone 630-260-2050. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Do I need a Wheaton-registered contractor for kitchen design?
Yes: contractors register online with the City; $75 fee, renewed annually. We take care of that before work starts.
Do you work in my part of Wheaton?
Yes. Our crews work across Wheaton, including Downtown Wheaton, Wheaton Center, Danada Square area — ZIP 60189, 60187 — and nearby Glen Ellyn, Winfield, Glendale Heights.
