Layout problems we solve in West Chicago kitchens

Most of what makes a kitchen work is decided on paper: where the sink sits, how wide the aisles are, which drawer holds the pots. We measure your West Chicago kitchen, sketch a few layout options and refine one into drawings our crew builds from.

A 1990s layout with a peninsula and soffits

Typical 1990s plans close the kitchen with a peninsula and upper cabinets hanging over it. Redrawing that one element often changes the whole room.

Lighting and outlets planned as an afterthought

Outlets that land behind the coffee maker and a single switch for the whole room come from skipping the electrical plan. Ours shows every light, switch and outlet.

Narrow galley kitchen

A galley can be very efficient if it is planned well: the sink and range on opposite runs, tall storage at one end and no doors swinging into each other.

The work triangle doesn't work

When the three main stations are spread out or blocked by an island, cooking turns into laps. We rearrange them so the steps between them are short and nothing cuts through the middle.

You can't picture the finished room

Most people can't judge a kitchen from a line drawing, and that's fine. Our 3D renderings show colors, heights and clearances in a way you can react to.

Appliances chosen too late

Appliance size drives the whole layout. We settle the fridge width, range size, hood type and dishwasher position first, then draw the cabinets around them.

Doorways and traffic through the kitchen

Kids heading for the fridge and the dog heading for the yard shouldn't cross in front of the stove. We plan the layout around how people move through the room.

No landing space next to appliances

If you have to turn around to put anything down when the oven door is open, the landing areas are missing. We plan counter space exactly where hands need it.

Everything in a kitchen design

  • Site measurementA full measure of the room, plus where the drain, gas line, duct and panel sit.
  • Needs and habits interviewWe go through who cooks, how often, what you store and what frustrates you now.
  • Appliance planWe fix the appliance list early and check each opening, circuit and duct run.
  • Lighting and electrical planAn electrical layout showing each light, switch, dimmer and outlet location.
  • 3D viewsRenderings from the angles you will see most, with your cabinet colors and counters.
  • Drawings for permit and constructionConstruction drawings with dimensions, and permit drawings when walls, plumbing or wiring change.
  • Written, itemized estimateA line-item estimate tied to the final drawings, so you see where the money goes.

Choices you'll make

U-shaped layoutCabinets on three sides, a good choice for a closed kitchen where one cook does most of the work.
L-shaped layout with an islandTwo perpendicular runs plus an island, which works well when the room is open on one side.
Peninsula instead of an islandA counter attached to one run, giving seating and prep space where a full island won't fit.
Two-tone and wood accentsA painted perimeter with a wood or darker island adds depth without busy finishes.
Galley layoutParallel counters with a center aisle; compact and quick to work in when planned right.

Kitchen Design & Layout Planning in a 1980s two-story, West Chicago

A 1980s two-story in West Chicago, a typical kitchen for West Chicago. What we started with: golden-oak cabinets with oak soffits above, white Corian-style solid surface with a yellowed seam and black appliances. What bothered the owners most: a cramped layout with nowhere to prep. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in light warm taupe, warm walnut butcher block counters and recessed lights and under-cabinet LED strips. The job covered needs and habits interview, 3D views, plus drawings for permit and construction.

The site: a 1990s two-story colonial in Winfield. What we started with: white thermofoil cabinets peeling at the edges, oak trim, white ceramic tile with dark stained grout lines and white appliances. The reason for the call: cabinets and a layout that no longer fit how they cook. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in terracotta, charcoal concrete-look quartz counters and a flush drum fixture and under-cabinet lights. Work included appliance plan, 3D views, plus written, itemized estimate.

Kitchen Design & Layout Planning questions from West Chicago homeowners

Can I just use a free kitchen design app?
Bring your app sketches; they help us understand what you like. We then check them against real dimensions, appliance specs and what's inside the walls.
How much space do I need for an island?
You need the island itself plus walking room on every side, usually around 42 inches, more where two people cook or a dishwasher opens. We check it on your plan before recommending one.
How long does the design take?
A simple refresh can be planned quickly; a full re-layout with permit drawings takes longer. We give you a timeline at the first meeting.
Do I choose appliances before the cabinets?
Pick them first, or at least their sizes. The cabinet plan depends on them.
Do I need a designer if I already know what I want?
Yes, if you want the result to match the picture. We turn your ideas into measured drawings and flag anything that won't fit.
Do I need a West Chicago-registered contractor for kitchen design?
All contractors and subcontractors working in West Chicago must be registered with the City (insurance, licensing and bonding are checked). We take care of that before work starts.
What is the West Chicago building department phone number?
Permits go through Community Development Department. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Do I need a permit for kitchen design in West Chicago?
It depends on the scope. West Chicago's rule in short: West Chicago requires a building permit for certain home improvement and remodeling projects; the city publishes an Additions & Remodeling permit guide with a submittal checklist. We handle the permit when one is needed with Community Development Department.
Do you work in my part of West Chicago?
Yes. Our crews work across West Chicago — ZIP 60185 — and nearby Winfield, Carol Stream, St. Charles.
