Island and peninsula problems we solve in Hanover Park

An island only helps if you can still walk around it. Before we build one in your Hanover Park kitchen, we check aisle widths, door swings and where power and water can reach, then install a base anchored to the floor with a top, seating and outlets that work.

Dated peninsula with a half wall

Many 1970s kitchens have a peninsula topped with a knee wall or hanging cabinets. Removing them opens the view and leaves a clean seating counter.

Nowhere to prep

Cutting boards balanced next to the sink and dough rolled on the stove — an island adds a long, open work surface in the middle of the room.

Clutter with no storage

Counters full of things that have nowhere to go? Island drawers and pull-outs give them a home.

Small kitchen with no room for an island

If an island would make the kitchen cramped, extending the counter into a peninsula gives most of the benefit.

Island in the dark

One ceiling light over the island leaves shadows on the work surface. We add pendants on their own switch and dimmer.

Cracked overhang on a stone top

Stone seating ledges need hidden support plates or brackets once they reach past what the slab can carry alone. We build them in.

Want the cooktop in the island

A cooktop in the island needs ventilation from a ceiling hood or a downdraft unit, plus a gas line or a heavy circuit. We plan all of it before building.

Island too small to be useful

Small islands often leave unused floor around them. A longer or deeper island uses that space for storage and seats.

What the project covers

  • Layout and clearance checkWe measure the room and mark the island footprint to confirm walkways and appliance door swings.
  • Floor prepWe repair the floor under the footprint and install cleats or blocking to fasten the base.
  • Plumbing and ventingDrain, vent and supply lines for an island sink or dishwasher, run by licensed trades.
  • Island cabinets set and anchoredBase cabinets assembled, leveled and screwed to the floor blocking so the island can't move.
  • Panels and seating sideDecorative panels on the exposed sides and a clean seating face for the stools.
  • Overhang supportHidden or visible supports sized to the overhang and the countertop material.
  • Outlets, pendants and hookupsOutlets trimmed out, pendants hung and the sink and dishwasher connected.

Finishes and options

Pop-up and side outletsWe place outlets where code allows and where they won't be in a spill zone.
Island cabinetsStock, semi-custom or custom bases in a matching or contrasting finish.
Quartz and granite topsQuartz for low upkeep, granite for heat resistance; both need support at seating overhangs.
Waterfall endsThe countertop continues down the sides of the island to the floor for a clean modern look.
Counter or bar height seatingCounter height keeps one continuous surface; a raised bar hides prep clutter from the room.

A Hanover Park 1970s split-level: before and after

This one is a 1970s split-level near Ontarioville. The kitchen as it was: dark stained oak cabinets with wide face frames and a scalloped wood valance over the sink and harvest-gold laminate. What bothered the owners most: a kitchen with no room to prep or gather. Finished kitchen: a new island in dusty blue with a creamy quartzite-look quartz top and seating. The job covered layout and clearance check, plumbing and venting, plus island cabinets set and anchored.

Bartlett kitchen, 1990s two-story colonial: kitchen island & peninsula installation

A 1990s two-story colonial in Bartlett, a typical kitchen for Bartlett. What we started with: golden-oak cabinets with oak soffits above and white Corian-style solid surface with a yellowed seam. The reason for the call: no central counter for prep and seating. The result: a new island in dusty blue with a dark soapstone-look quartz top and seating. On site this meant layout and clearance check, floor prep, plus outlets, pendants and hookups.

The main complaint was too little counter space and nowhere to sit. Finished kitchen: a new island in terracotta with a warm walnut butcher block top and seating. Kitchen Island & Peninsula Installation questions from Hanover Park homeowners

Can you put a cooktop or range in the island?
We can, as long as there's a way to vent it and safe counter space on each side. We plan the hood and the utility lines together.
Should the island be fixed or freestanding?
Most islands we install are fixed so they can carry stone and power safely; freestanding units are lighter and simpler.
How much does it cost to add a kitchen island?
A plain island with an outlet costs far less than one with a sink and dishwasher. We measure and send a line-item quote.
Will my floor hold a stone island?
Most residential floors carry a typical stone island without trouble. For very large slabs we check the framing from below and add blocking if needed.
How long does island installation take?
The island itself goes in quickly. Waiting for cabinets, inspections and the countertop fabrication is what sets the total schedule.
Hanover Park contractor registration: do kitchen contractors need it?
All contractors must be registered and bonded with the Village before a building permit is issued; apply via Inspectional Services. We take care of that before work starts.
What is the Hanover Park building department phone number?
Permits go through Inspectional Services Division (Hanover Park Fire Department), phone 630-823-5860. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Do you work in my part of Hanover Park?
Yes. Our crews work across Hanover Park, including Ontarioville — ZIP 60133 — and nearby Bartlett, Roselle, Bloomingdale.
