Layout problems we solve in Crystal Lake kitchens

We plan kitchens for Crystal Lake homeowners who want the room to work better, not just look newer. You get measured drawings, an appliance plan, a cabinet layout and 3D views, and because we also build kitchens, the plan is one we know can be built.

A 1990s layout with a peninsula and soffits

Soffits, a small peninsula and a desk nook are common in 1990s kitchens. We plan around any ducts in the soffits and reuse the nook as pantry or coffee storage.

No room for an island

We check the floor space first. A smaller island, a peninsula or a table at counter height can give the same seating and prep space without the squeeze.

Appliances chosen too late

Specs first, cabinets second. We confirm the exact appliances, their clearances and their hookups before the cabinet order is final.

Doorways and traffic through the kitchen

Kids heading for the fridge and the dog heading for the yard shouldn't cross in front of the stove. We plan the layout around how people move through the room.

Sink and range on the same wall

One long wall with everything on it leaves almost no prep space between the stations. We consider an island or peninsula that takes one station, or a longer run with a clear prep zone.

Lighting and outlets planned as an afterthought

Outlets that land behind the coffee maker and a single switch for the whole room come from skipping the electrical plan. Ours shows every light, switch and outlet.

A layout that no longer fits how you live

If the room has a desk nobody uses and no place for the kids to sit, the plan is out of date. We rethink it around your actual routine.

Narrow galley kitchen

We work galley kitchens hard: shallow pantry cabinets, cabinets to the ceiling, a counter-depth fridge and, where a wall allows, an opening to the next room.

Everything in a kitchen design

  • Site measurementA full measure of the room, plus where the drain, gas line, duct and panel sit.
  • Needs and habits interviewA conversation about your routine, your storage and your wish list, written down as the brief.
  • Layout optionsSeveral floor-plan options with the trade-offs of each, so you choose the direction.
  • Appliance planAppliance sizes, clearances, hood venting and hookups confirmed against the models you pick.
  • Cabinet and storage layoutA detailed cabinet plan with drawer stacks, corner solutions and tall storage.
  • Lighting and electrical planAn electrical layout showing each light, switch, dimmer and outlet location.
  • Written, itemized estimateThe finished plan comes with a detailed written estimate you can adjust by line.

Finishes and options

U-shaped layoutThree walls of cabinets give the most counter and storage, as long as the opening stays wide enough.
Shaker and slab cabinet stylesShaker doors suit most homes; slab doors give a cleaner, modern look.
Peninsula instead of an islandA counter attached to one run, giving seating and prep space where a full island won't fit.
Galley layoutTwo parallel runs, efficient for one cook and very common in older homes and condos.
Two-tone and wood accentsA painted perimeter with a wood or darker island adds depth without busy finishes.

A Crystal Lake 1980s two-story: before and after

The site: a 1980s two-story near Coventry. What we started with: honey-oak cathedral raised-panel cabinets with worn finish near the handles, brass knobs, almond laminate with a backsplash lip and almond appliances. The reason for the call: cabinets and a layout that no longer fit how they cook. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in white uppers and dusty blue lowers, warm walnut butcher block counters and recessed lights and under-cabinet LED strips. The job covered site measurement, appliance plan, plus lighting and electrical plan.

Hoffman Estates kitchen, raised ranch: kitchen design & layout planning

The site: a raised ranch in Hoffman Estates. Before: white painted cabinets with yellowed paint and dated scalloped trim, white laminate with brown flecks and an almond range and refrigerator. What bothered the owners most: a kitchen closed off from the rest of the house. After: a new layout with an island, cabinets in terracotta, dark soapstone-look quartz counters and recessed lights and under-cabinet LED strips. The job covered site measurement, layout options, plus cabinet and storage layout.

Before and after: a 1980s two-story in Palatine

A 1980s two-story in Palatine, a typical kitchen for Palatine. The kitchen as it was: white thermofoil cabinets peeling at the edges, oak trim, white ceramic tile with dark stained grout lines and white appliances. The reason for the call: a cramped layout and storage that didn't work. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in terracotta, charcoal concrete-look quartz counters and a flush drum fixture and under-cabinet lights. On site this meant site measurement, lighting and electrical plan, plus written, itemized estimate.

Kitchen Design & Layout Planning questions from Crystal Lake homeowners

Can you design around my existing plumbing?
Yes, and it often makes sense. Keeping the sink and gas where they are saves construction time, and we change them only where it fixes a real problem.
Which kitchen trends will date quickly?
Anything that depends on one season's color tends to date fastest. We steer the expensive, permanent parts toward classic choices and put trend colors on paint and hardware.
How much space do I need for an island?
You need the island itself plus walking room on every side, usually around 42 inches, more where two people cook or a dishwasher opens. We check it on your plan before recommending one.
Do you build the kitchen you design?
We do. Design and construction under one roof means the drawings are checked by the people who will build them.
Can I just use a free kitchen design app?
Use one to play with layouts, then let us confirm it. Most app layouts need changes once clearances and hookups are measured.
Which Crystal Lake homes do you most often see for kitchen design?
In Crystal Lake we see Many older lakeshore homes varying in size and style and Downtown homes range in size and age. Each comes with its own walls, wiring and plumbing, and we plan the job around them.
Does kitchen design need a Crystal Lake building permit, and who files it?
Permits go through City of Crystal Lake Community Development - Building Division (ezAPP online permits), phone (815) 356-3605. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Do I need a permit for kitchen design in Crystal Lake?
It depends on the scope. Crystal Lake's rule in short: Kitchen alteration handout (Nov 2019) requires a contractor list and two sets of plans showing floor plans, electrical layout, structure and plumbing changes; inspections for rough electrical, plumbing, framing, insulation and final. We handle the permit when one is needed with City of Crystal Lake Community Development - Building Division.
Do you work in my part of Crystal Lake?
Yes. Our crews work across Crystal Lake, including Downtown, Coventry, Four Colonies, The Villages — ZIP 60014, 60012, 60098 — and nearby Lake Zurich, Elgin, Hoffman Estates.
