Island and peninsula problems we solve in Winfield

An island only helps if you can still walk around it. Before we build one in your Winfield kitchen, we check aisle widths, door swings and where power and water can reach, then install a base anchored to the floor with a top, seating and outlets that work.

Dated peninsula with a half wall

Many 1980s kitchens have a peninsula topped with a knee wall or hanging cabinets. Removing them opens the view and leaves a clean seating counter.

No place to sit in the kitchen

A counter with seating turns the kitchen into the spot where people gather. We size the overhang and the stool spacing so it's comfortable.

Want a sink in the island

Facing the family while washing up is a common wish. We plan the drain, vent and supply lines and add a dishwasher next to the island sink.

Small kitchen with no room for an island

A peninsula needs clearance on fewer sides than an island. In tighter kitchens it's often the better choice.

Island that wobbles or shifts

Wobbly islands crack countertops and loosen cabinets. Ours are screwed to blocking on the floor and leveled first.

Island in the dark

One ceiling light over the island leaves shadows on the work surface. We add pendants on their own switch and dimmer.

Want the cooktop in the island

If you want to cook facing the room, we plan the island around the cooktop, the ventilation path and safe space on both sides.

No outlets at the island

Outlets are part of almost every island we build, both because code usually requires one and because people use them daily.

What's included

  • Layout and clearance checkWe measure the room and mark the island footprint to confirm walkways and appliance door swings.
  • Floor prepOld flooring patched where a previous island or peninsula stood, and blocking added for anchoring.
  • Electrical rough-inA circuit run to the island for outlets, plus wiring for pendants overhead.
  • Island cabinets set and anchoredWe set the island boxes level, join them and fasten them down.
  • Overhang supportSteel brackets, support plates or corbels for seating overhangs on stone tops.
  • CountertopWe measure the finished island for the countertop and install it once fabricated.
  • Outlets, pendants and hookupsOutlets trimmed out, pendants hung and the sink and dishwasher connected.

Finishes and options

Island cabinetsIsland cabinets can match the perimeter or stand out in another color or wood.
Pop-up and side outletsWe place outlets where code allows and where they won't be in a spill zone.
Quartz and granite topsQuartz for low upkeep, granite for heat resistance; both need support at seating overhangs.
Waterfall endsA slab that wraps over the ends to the floor and protects the cabinet sides.
Butcher blockWood tops add warmth and are pleasant for prep; they need oiling or sealing from time to time.

A Winfield two-story colonial from the 1990s: before and after

A two-story colonial from the 1990s in Winfield, a typical kitchen for Winfield. Before: white thermofoil cabinets peeling at the edges, oak trim and white ceramic tile with dark stained grout lines. What bothered the owners most: too little counter space and nowhere to sit. The result: a new island in terracotta with a warm walnut butcher block top and seating. Work included layout and clearance check, overhang support, plus countertop.

Wheaton kitchen, two-story colonial from the 1990s: kitchen island & peninsula installation

A two-story colonial from the 1990s near Downtown Wheaton, a typical kitchen for Wheaton. What we started with: honey-oak cathedral raised-panel cabinets with worn finish near the handles, brass knobs and almond laminate with a backsplash lip. The reason for the call: too little counter space and nowhere to sit. After: a new island in dusty blue with a black honed granite top and seating. On site this meant layout and clearance check, electrical rough-in, plus island cabinets set and anchored.

Kitchen Island & Peninsula Installation questions from Winfield homeowners

Island or peninsula — which is better?
An island needs walkways on every side; a peninsula attaches to a wall or cabinet run and needs fewer. In smaller kitchens a peninsula often works better.
How much does it cost to add a kitchen island?
Size, cabinets, countertop material and whether wiring or plumbing go to the island drive the price. We give a written, itemized estimate after the visit.
Should the island be fixed or freestanding?
Most islands we install are fixed so they can carry stone and power safely; freestanding units are lighter and simpler.
Does a kitchen island need an electrical outlet?
In many jurisdictions, yes — code usually requires at least one outlet on an island counter. We confirm the local rules and wire it with GFCI protection.
Will my floor hold a stone island?
Usually yes. We look at the joists when the island is large or sits mid-span and reinforce if anything seems marginal.
Winfield building permit for island project: where do I apply?
Permits go through Building and Safety / Community Development (Village of Winfield), phone 630-665-1767. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Do you work in my part of Winfield?
Yes. Our crews work across Winfield — ZIP 60190, 60185 — and nearby Wheaton, Carol Stream, West Chicago.
