Cabinet problems a paint job fixes

We paint kitchen cabinets in St. Charles with durable cabinet-grade coatings, not wall paint. Proper cleaning, sanding and primer are what make the finish last — that is where most of our time goes.

Oak grain showing through

On 2000s oak cabinets the choice is grain-filled and smooth or painted with the texture showing — we show you both on a sample door.

Holes from old hardware

Switching from knobs to pulls leaves old holes. We fill and sand them flush before primer, so they disappear under the new finish.

Dark kitchen

Dark wood cabinets soak up light. A lighter painted finish makes a small kitchen feel bigger and brighter without new lighting.

Sticky, greasy cabinet doors

Years of cooking grease build up near the range. We degrease with a cabinet cleaner before sanding — paint will not stick to grease.

Brush marks and drips

Brush strokes and paint runs from an earlier job are sanded out, and the doors are sprayed smooth.

Yellowed white cabinets

If your white cabinets have turned cream or yellow, we repaint with a modern coating that doesn't yellow.

Peeling or chipped paint

Chips along door edges and peeling by the sink come from skipped degreasing or the wrong paint. We take it back to a sound surface and start right.

Worn finish around handles

High-touch spots wear first. We repair the bare areas and can add new pulls in the same visit.

What's included

  • Cleaning and degreasingEvery surface is cleaned with a cabinet degreaser before any sanding.
  • Bonding primerA bonding or stain-blocking primer that grips the old finish and stops tannin bleed.
  • Sprayed doorsDoors and drawer fronts are sprayed in a controlled setting for a smooth finish.
  • Frames and end panelsFace frames, end panels and crown molding are painted in place with masking and floor protection.
  • Reinstall and adjustmentDoors rehung, hinges adjusted so gaps are even, and touch-ups done on site.

  • Island and bathroom vanitiesThe island, a pantry or bathroom vanities painted in the same visit, in matching or contrasting colors.

Finishes we offer

St. Charles kitchen, two-story colonial from the 1990s: kitchen cabinet painting

A two-story colonial from the 1990s in St. Charles, a typical kitchen for St. Charles. What we started with: honey-oak cathedral raised-panel cabinets with worn finish near the handles, brass knobs. The reason for the call: the dated wood tone. After: the same doors sprayed in light butter yellow, new brushed nickel bar pulls; counters and floor stayed as they were. On site this meant frames and end panels, reinstall and adjustment, plus new hardware and hinges.

The job covered cleaning and degreasing, reinstall and adjustment, plus new hardware and hinges.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting questions from St. Charles homeowners

Do you paint bathroom vanities too?
We do. Many clients add the vanities once they see the kitchen.
Is it smelly?
We use waterborne cabinet coatings with low odor, and the doors are sprayed outside your home.
How long will the kitchen be out of use?
Most kitchens take about a week. You can use the counters and appliances the whole time — only the doors are away.
Painted or stained cabinets — which is better?
It's a look and maintenance choice: paint for color, stain for wood grain. We do both and can mix them, e.g. painted perimeter and stained island.
Do you paint the inside of the cabinets?
Only if you want it; interiors are an add-on. Glass-front and open cabinets are where people usually choose it.
St. Charles contractor registration: do kitchen contractors need it?
No registration fee; contractor requirements (general contractor certificate of insurance, with City as certificate holder) must be submitted before a permit is issued. We take care of that before work starts.
Do I need a permit for cabinet painting in St. Charles?
It depends on the scope. St. Charles's rule in short: Permits required for construction, alteration, repair or demolition of any structure; major residential projects including remodels require 5 sets of drawings. We handle the permit when one is needed with Building Division, Community Development, 2 E. Main St..
Do you work in my part of St. Charles?
Yes. Our crews work across St. Charles — ZIP 60174, 60175 — and nearby Geneva, West Chicago, Batavia.
