Island and peninsula problems we solve in Glen Ellyn

Most Glen Ellyn homeowners want the same three things from an island: more counter space, a place to sit and extra storage. We plan the size around the room, run the electrical the code usually calls for, and suggest a peninsula when an island would crowd the kitchen.

Dated peninsula with a half wall

A half wall on the peninsula hides the cook. We remove it, move the outlets to code-compliant spots and add seating.

Island that wobbles or shifts

A freestanding island that slides when you lean on it isn't safe for stone. We fasten the base to the floor with cleats so it stays put.

Aisles too tight around the island

Squeezing past the island every time someone opens the fridge means it's too big for the room. A narrower island or a peninsula frees the aisle.

Nowhere to prep

Cutting boards balanced next to the sink and dough rolled on the stove — an island adds a long, open work surface in the middle of the room.

Clutter with no storage

An island adds drawers for pots, a trash pull-out and shelves for cookbooks, which clears the perimeter counters.

Island too small to be useful

Small islands often leave unused floor around them. A longer or deeper island uses that space for storage and seats.

Want the cooktop in the island

A cooktop in the island needs ventilation from a ceiling hood or a downdraft unit, plus a gas line or a heavy circuit. We plan all of it before building.

Want a sink in the island

Facing the family while washing up is a common wish. We plan the drain, vent and supply lines and add a dishwasher next to the island sink.

What's included

  • Layout and clearance checkTaped outlines on the floor so you can walk around the island before anything is ordered.
  • Floor prepOld flooring patched where a previous island or peninsula stood, and blocking added for anchoring.
  • Electrical rough-inPower routed through the floor or from an adjacent wall, with boxes placed for outlets and lights.
  • Plumbing and ventingWater lines and a properly vented drain when the island gets a sink.
  • Island cabinets set and anchoredBase cabinets assembled, leveled and screwed to the floor blocking so the island can't move.
  • CountertopWe measure the finished island for the countertop and install it once fabricated.
  • Outlets, pendants and hookupsFinal electrical and plumbing connections and a test of every outlet and light.

Choices you'll make

Counter or bar height seatingOne level is easier to work on; a two-level top separates cooking from sitting.
Pop-up and side outletsOutlets on the island side panels or pop-up units in the top keep power within reach.
Waterfall endsA slab that wraps over the ends to the floor and protects the cabinet sides.
Legs, corbels and bracketsFurniture legs or corbels support overhangs and give the island a built-in look.
Island cabinetsStock, semi-custom or custom bases in a matching or contrasting finish.

Kitchen Island & Peninsula Installation questions from Glen Ellyn homeowners

Should the island be fixed or freestanding?
Most islands we install are fixed so they can carry stone and power safely; freestanding units are lighter and simpler.
How long does island installation take?
Plan on a few visits over one to a few weeks: rough-in, cabinets, countertop template, top install and hookups.
How much overhang do I need for seating?
Roughly 12 to 15 inches at counter height is common, with about 24 inches of width per stool. Stone overhangs that deep usually need brackets.
Can the island match my existing cabinets?
We can match closely, but a deliberate contrast often looks better than a near-match with older cabinets.
Will my floor hold a stone island?
Most residential floors carry a typical stone island without trouble. For very large slabs we check the framing from below and add blocking if needed.
Do I need a Glen Ellyn-registered contractor for island project?
Contractors must register with the Village and meet license and insurance requirements (Village Code 4-1-11); work that does not need a building permit is exempt. We take care of that before work starts.
Do you work in my part of Glen Ellyn?
Yes. Our crews work across Glen Ellyn — ZIP 60137 — and nearby Wheaton, Lombard, Glendale Heights.
