Countertop problems we fix in Elgin

New countertops change a Elgin kitchen in a day once the slab is cut. We help you choose the material, template the cabinets on site, fabricate the tops with your sink and cooktop cut-outs and install them with tight seams.

Original laminate from the pre-1940

Rolled-edge laminate from the pre-1940 comes off in an hour; new stone and a tile backsplash go in after.

Stained or burned laminate

Swollen laminate around the sink and scorch marks by the stove — it is time for a surface that stands up to daily use.

Not enough counter space

We can extend a run, add a peninsula or enlarge the island top with an overhang for seating, supported properly underneath.

Cracked or chipped stone

Some cracks and chips can be repaired; when they run through the slab or sit by the sink, new tops are the lasting fix.

Seams that show or separate

A seam you can feel or see from across the room is a fabrication issue. We place seams away from sight lines and the sink.

Undermount sink coming loose

If the sink is dropping away from the stone, we remount it correctly with the new counters and reseal the edge.

Tile counters with dirty grout

Grout lines that never come clean and chipped tile edges are typical complaints. A solid slab is easier to clean and to work on.

Counters that stain easily

If coffee rings and oil spots soak in, we talk through low-maintenance surfaces like quartz.

Elgin kitchen, 1980s two-story: countertop installation

The site: a 1980s two-story near West Side. What we started with: white ceramic tile with dark stained grout lines and white double sink. What bothered the owners most: tile counters with grout that never looked clean. The result: warm walnut butcher block countertops with a tight seam, an undermount sink and a new faucet. On site this meant cabinet check and leveling, digital templating, plus installation and seams.

Countertop Installation questions from Elgin homeowners

Can you reuse my existing sink?
Yes, if it is undamaged and works with the new counter. Drop-in sinks can be swapped for undermount.
What's the downside of quartz countertops?
It can scorch under hot pans and isn't rated for outdoor use; otherwise it's very low maintenance.
Do you install laminate and solid surface too?
We install laminate, solid surface, quartz, granite and wood — whatever fits the budget.
Can I put hot pans or a toaster on quartz?
A toaster is fine. Hot pans straight from the stove should go on a trivet — high heat can mark the resin in quartz.
Do my cabinets need to be replaced for stone?
Not usually. Most solid cabinets carry stone fine; we check level and support and reinforce where needed.
What kind of Elgin homes do you work in?
In Elgin we see Cobblestone homes, Victorian and Sears catalog kit homes. Each comes with its own walls, wiring and plumbing, and we plan the job around them.
Elgin building permit for countertop installation: where do I apply?
Permits go through Community Development Department (Building permits), City of Elgin, 150 Dexter Court, phone 847-931-6001. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Do I need a Elgin-registered contractor for countertop installation?
City requires a notarized letter of intent from all licensed contractors; general contractors submit one for each licensed subcontractor. We take care of that before work starts.
Do I need a permit for countertop installation in Elgin?
It depends on the scope. Elgin's rule in short: No kitchen-specific rule; interior remodeling (including kitchens) uses the general Remodeling Permit Application. We handle the permit when one is needed with Community Development Department (Building permits), City of Elgin, 150 Dexter Court.
Do you work in my part of Elgin?
Yes. Our crews work across Elgin, including Gifford Park, West Side, Downtown — ZIP 60123, 60124, 60120, 60140 — and nearby St. Charles, Bartlett, Hoffman Estates.
