Home Depot Cabinet Refacing and Quartz Countertop Installation: What to Know Before You Choose

Many homeowners start a kitchen project by looking at what a big-box store offers. Home Depot sells cabinet refacing and countertop installation as services: a consultant measures the kitchen, you choose materials, and the work is done by installers the store arranges. The questions we hear most are how much Home Depot charges to reface cabinets, how much Home Depot charges for quartz countertop installation, and what Home Depot cabinet refacing looks like before and after.

We cannot quote another company's prices, and they change with the project, the region and current promotions. The only reliable number is the written quote after an in-home measure. What we can do is explain what these programs generally include, what moves the price, and how to compare a store quote with one from an independent contractor. We are an independent kitchen contractor, not affiliated with The Home Depot; check Home Depot's own pages and your quote for current terms.

How Home Depot cabinet refacing generally works

Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes and layout and replaces what you see. Home Depot's description of its service lists new doors and drawer fronts, hardware and hinges, and a veneer applied to the cabinet frames to match. Countertops are usually separate, and refacing is typically done with the existing counters in place.

  1. In-home consultationA design consultant measures the kitchen, shows door styles and finishes, and prepares a quote.
  2. Selections and orderYou choose the door style, finish, hardware and any add-ons such as crown molding, new drawer boxes, pull-outs, extra cabinets or panels.
  3. InstallationThe work is normally done by an independent installer working under the store's program.
  4. Final walk-throughCheck doors for alignment, gaps and finish, and confirm who to contact for warranty issues.

Home Depot cabinet refacing before and after: what changes

Before and after photos of refacing can look dramatic, because doors and drawer fronts are most of what you see in a kitchen. Knowing what changes and what stays the same keeps your expectations in line with the result.

How much does Home Depot charge to reface cabinets?

There is no fixed price, and anyone quoting a number without seeing your kitchen is guessing. The price of a refacing job, at a store or with an independent shop, is built from the same factors. Knowing them lets you read a quote and see where the money goes.

  • The number of doors and drawer fronts, the main unit of the job.
  • Door material and style: laminate or thermofoil, wood veneer or solid wood.
  • Linear feet of cabinet frame to cover and the number of exposed end panels.
  • Add-ons such as new drawer boxes, soft-close hardware, crown molding and pull-outs.
  • Repairs found during the measure, and any cabinets added or replaced.
  • Promotions, financing offers and the installer's labor rates in your area.

Home Depot quartz countertop installation

Home Depot also offers countertop installation for quartz and other materials through its services program. The sequence at most countertop companies is similar, store or independent.

How much does Home Depot charge to install quartz countertops?

It depends on the quartz brand and color group, the square footage, the number of seams, the cutouts for sinks and cooktops, the edge profile, the backsplash, and whether old counters must be torn out and hauled away. Plumbing disconnection and reconnection may or may not be included, so ask before you sign.

  1. Choose material and edgePick the quartz brand, color and edge profile.
  2. TemplateA templater measures the cabinets after they are set and level.
  3. FabricateThe slab is cut at a fabrication shop, including sink and cooktop cutouts.
  4. InstallA crew sets the tops, joins and finishes the seams, and secures the sink.

Signs your cabinets are good candidates for refacing

Refacing makes sense when the bones of the kitchen are sound and you mainly want a new look. Check these points yourself before booking any consultation.

  • The boxes are plywood or solid particleboard with no swelling, sagging shelves or loose joints.
  • Doors close squarely and the face frames are not cracked or split.
  • You are happy with the layout, the sink location and where the appliances sit.
  • The countertop is staying, or you plan to replace it as a separate step.
  • There is no ongoing leak under the sink; fix water damage before covering anything with veneer.

Questions to ask before you sign any kitchen quote

Whether the quote comes from Home Depot, another store or an independent contractor, the same questions make quotes comparable. Ask for every answer in writing.

  • Exactly which doors, drawers, panels and add-ons are included, listed by count.
  • Who does the work, whether they are licensed where required and insured, and who you call with problems.
  • Who pulls permits, if any are needed for plumbing or electrical changes.
  • Whether demolition, disposal, sink and faucet reconnection and wall repairs are included.
  • The warranty on materials and on workmanship, and who honors each.
  • The schedule from measure to installation, and what happens if a part arrives damaged.

Store program or independent contractor?

Both routes can produce a good kitchen; they are organized differently. The table sets the differences side by side so you can weigh them against your project.

With an independent contractor, you check insurance, references and warranty yourself. Getting quotes from both is a reasonable way to see which fits your kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

Is cabinet refacing worth it compared with new cabinets?
It is often worth it when the layout works and the boxes are solid. If you want to move the sink, change the layout or the boxes are damaged, new cabinets usually make more sense.
Does Home Depot use its own employees to install?
Store installation programs generally use independent installers who work under the program. Your quote and contract should name who is responsible for the work and the warranty.
How long does cabinet refacing take?
The on-site work is often a few days for an average kitchen, but the full timeline is longer because doors and veneers are ordered after the measure. Ask for the expected lead time in writing.
Can I reface cabinets and replace countertops at the same time?
Yes, and it is often done that way. Refacing usually happens first, then the countertop is templated and installed, or the counters go in first if the refacer can work around them; settle the order before ordering.
Which quartz brand is best for a kitchen?
Most major quartz brands perform similarly in daily use; differences show up in color, pattern, slab size and warranty. See our guide to kitchen product options for a neutral comparison.
Do I need a permit for cabinet refacing or a countertop swap?
Usually not for refacing or a like-for-like countertop replacement alone, but rules vary by village. Moving plumbing or adding circuits typically does require a permit.
