Island and peninsula problems we solve in Buffalo Grove

Whether you are adding a first island, replacing a small one or turning a wall into a peninsula with stools, the job is part carpentry, part trades. Our Buffalo Grove crew handles the cabinets, the floor anchoring, wiring, any plumbing and the countertop in one schedule.

Dated peninsula with a half wall

Upper cabinets hung over a 1980s peninsula block the room. We take them down, reroute any wiring and rebuild the peninsula with an overhang.

Want a sink in the island

Facing the family while washing up is a common wish. We plan the drain, vent and supply lines and add a dishwasher next to the island sink.

Island in the dark

Pendant lights over the island light the prep area and define the space. We wire them while the ceiling is open.

No outlets at the island

Outlets are part of almost every island we build, both because code usually requires one and because people use them daily.

Cracked overhang on a stone top

Stone seating ledges need hidden support plates or brackets once they reach past what the slab can carry alone. We build them in.

No place to sit in the kitchen

If everyone stands around while you cook, a seating side on an island or peninsula gives them a place without blocking the work zone.

Clutter with no storage

Counters full of things that have nowhere to go? Island drawers and pull-outs give them a home.

Small kitchen with no room for an island

If an island would make the kitchen cramped, extending the counter into a peninsula gives most of the benefit.

What's included

  • Layout and clearance checkTaped outlines on the floor so you can walk around the island before anything is ordered.
  • Floor prepOld flooring patched where a previous island or peninsula stood, and blocking added for anchoring.
  • Electrical rough-inPower routed through the floor or from an adjacent wall, with boxes placed for outlets and lights.
  • Plumbing and ventingDrain, vent and supply lines for an island sink or dishwasher, run by licensed trades.
  • Overhang supportHidden or visible supports sized to the overhang and the countertop material.
  • CountertopWe measure the finished island for the countertop and install it once fabricated.
  • Outlets, pendants and hookupsOutlets trimmed out, pendants hung and the sink and dishwasher connected.

Choices you'll make

Legs, corbels and bracketsFurniture legs or corbels support overhangs and give the island a built-in look.
Counter or bar height seatingOne level is easier to work on; a two-level top separates cooking from sitting.
Quartz and granite topsQuartz for low upkeep, granite for heat resistance; both need support at seating overhangs.
Pop-up and side outletsWe place outlets where code allows and where they won't be in a spill zone.
Waterfall endsA slab that wraps over the ends to the floor and protects the cabinet sides.

Buffalo Grove kitchen, 1980s two-story: kitchen island & peninsula installation

The site: a 1980s two-story in Buffalo Grove. What we started with: white thermofoil cabinets peeling at the edges, oak trim and white ceramic tile with dark stained grout lines. What bothered the owners most: a kitchen with no room to prep or gather. The result: a new island in terracotta with a warm walnut butcher block top and seating. Work included floor prep, plumbing and venting, plus outlets, pendants and hookups.

Kitchen Island & Peninsula Installation questions from Buffalo Grove homeowners

Can the island match my existing cabinets?
We can match closely, but a deliberate contrast often looks better than a near-match with older cabinets.
How much overhang do I need for seating?
A seating overhang of roughly 12–15 inches works for most people; allow around 24 inches of counter per stool.
Should the island be fixed or freestanding?
A fixed island anchored to the floor is the right choice for stone, plumbing or outlets. Freestanding pieces suit butcher-block tops and small kitchens.
Does a kitchen island need an electrical outlet?
Usually yes. Codes generally call for island receptacles, and you'll want one for small appliances anyway.
Island or peninsula — which is better?
Islands give you access from all sides, peninsulas save floor space. We look at the room and the traffic path before recommending one.
Does Buffalo Grove require a licensed plumber for island project?
Plumbing permit requires a letter of intent from the licensed plumber; contractors provide State of Illinois plumbing license and 055 contractor registration. Our plumbing connections are made by licensed plumbers.
What kind of Buffalo Grove homes do you work in?
In Buffalo Grove we see Early post-Korean War single-family homes, some about 1,000 sq ft. Each comes with its own walls, wiring and plumbing, and we plan the job around them.
What does Buffalo Grove ask for on electrical work?
Electrical contractors provide a copy of current electrical registration/license; Village honors registrations from Illinois municipalities that require a written exam. New circuits and wiring are done by licensed electricians.
Does island project need a Buffalo Grove building permit, and who files it?
Permits go through Community Development Services, Building & Zoning Services (BS&A Online), phone 847-459-2530. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Do I need a Buffalo Grove-registered contractor for island project?
All contractors working in the Village must register annually; $75 per trade, no fee for state-licensed contractors. We take care of that before work starts.
Do I need a permit for island project in Buffalo Grove?
It depends on the scope. Buffalo Grove's rule in short: Permit required to replace or modify a kitchen, including replacing cabinetry; replacing a sink or faucet needs a plumbing permit even in the same location; electrical must meet the 2017 NEC. We handle the permit when one is needed with Community Development Services, Building & Zoning Services.
Do you work in my part of Buffalo Grove?
Yes. Our crews work across Buffalo Grove, including The Highlands, Green Knolls, Windfield, Didier Farms — ZIP 60089 — and nearby Arlington Heights, Palatine, Lake Zurich.
