Layout problems we solve in Addison kitchens

We plan kitchens for Addison homeowners who want the room to work better, not just look newer. You get measured drawings, an appliance plan, a cabinet layout and 3D views, and because we also build kitchens, the plan is one we know can be built.

A 1960s layout with a peninsula and soffits

Typical 1960s plans close the kitchen with a peninsula and upper cabinets hanging over it. Redrawing that one element often changes the whole room.

No landing space next to appliances

If you have to turn around to put anything down when the oven door is open, the landing areas are missing. We plan counter space exactly where hands need it.

Sink and range on the same wall

One long wall with everything on it leaves almost no prep space between the stations. We consider an island or peninsula that takes one station, or a longer run with a clear prep zone.

Doorways and traffic through the kitchen

When the back door, the basement stairs and the dining room all open into the cook's path, everyone walks through the busiest spot. We shift the work zone out of that route.

Aisles that are too tight or too wide

An island crammed into a room that can't take it is worse than no island. We measure the clearances first and size the island, or a peninsula, to fit.

Corners and dead storage

If you own more containers than you can find, the storage plan is wrong. We assign each zone its drawers, pull-outs and pantry space before choosing doors.

Appliances chosen too late

A range or refrigerator picked after the cabinets are ordered often won't fit. We build the plan around the model numbers you choose, with the right openings, power, gas and venting.

The work triangle doesn't work

When the three main stations are spread out or blocked by an island, cooking turns into laps. We rearrange them so the steps between them are short and nothing cuts through the middle.

Everything in a kitchen design

  • Site measurementA full measure of the room, plus where the drain, gas line, duct and panel sit.
  • Appliance planWe fix the appliance list early and check each opening, circuit and duct run.
  • Lighting and electrical planAn electrical layout showing each light, switch, dimmer and outlet location.
  • 3D viewsRenderings from the angles you will see most, with your cabinet colors and counters.
  • Material selectionsSamples of cabinets, counters and tile reviewed together in your own light.
  • Drawings for permit and constructionPlan and elevation drawings our crew builds from, plus what the village needs when the work requires a permit.
  • Written, itemized estimateA line-item estimate tied to the final drawings, so you see where the money goes.

Finishes and options

U-shaped layoutCabinets on three sides, a good choice for a closed kitchen where one cook does most of the work.
Galley layoutParallel counters with a center aisle; compact and quick to work in when planned right.
L-shaped layout with an islandThe most common plan in suburban homes: two walls of cabinets and an island for prep and seating.
Two-tone and wood accentsContrasting island or lower cabinets, a look that tends to age better than one-season trends.
Peninsula instead of an islandA counter attached to one run, giving seating and prep space where a full island won't fit.

Addison kitchen, 1950s ranch: kitchen design & layout planning

The site: a 1950s ranch in Addison. What we started with: original birch cabinets painted white decades ago, sagging doors, chrome pulls, laminate with an aluminum edge band and an older white range and a white refrigerator. The main complaint was a cramped layout and storage that didn't work. Finished kitchen: a new layout with an island, cabinets in warm white shaker, light gray quartz counters and a flush drum fixture and under-cabinet lights. Work included appliance plan, lighting and electrical plan, plus drawings for permit and construction.

Before: honey-oak cathedral raised-panel cabinets with worn finish near the handles, brass knobs, almond laminate with a backsplash lip and almond appliances. What bothered the owners most: cabinets and a layout that no longer fit how they cook. The result: a new layout with an island, cabinets in white uppers and dusty blue lowers, warm walnut butcher block counters and recessed lights and under-cabinet LED strips. The job covered lighting and electrical plan, drawings for permit and construction, plus written, itemized estimate.

Kitchen Design & Layout Planning questions from Addison homeowners

Do I choose appliances before the cabinets?
Ideally. We plan around exact models; if you're undecided, we size openings for the range of models you're considering.
Which layout suits my kitchen: galley, L, U or island?
The doors and windows usually decide it. After measuring we show which layouts fit and what each one gives you.
How much does kitchen design cost?
The scope sets the price, from a simple cabinet layout to full drawings with 3D views and permit sets. You'll get the number in writing before we start.
Can you design around my existing plumbing?
Yes, and it often makes sense. Keeping the sink and gas where they are saves construction time, and we change them only where it fixes a real problem.
How long does the design take?
Often a few weeks from the first visit to final drawings, depending on how many revisions you want and how quickly selections are made.
Does kitchen design need a Addison building permit, and who files it?
Permits go through Community Development Department (Building & Zoning), phone (630) 693-7530. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Addison contractor registration: do kitchen contractors need it?
Addison does not require contractor registration, but trade licenses and a Letter of Intent must be submitted with each permit application. We take care of that before work starts.
Do I need a permit for kitchen design in Addison?
It depends on the scope. Addison's rule in short: Addison's Building Division states building permits are required by code for all work; most applications are reviewed within 10 business days through the online portal. We handle the permit when one is needed with Community Development Department (Building & Zoning).
Do you work in my part of Addison?
Yes. Our crews work across Addison — ZIP 60101 — and nearby Wood Dale, Itasca, Villa Park.
