Countertop Repair, Refinishing or Replacement: Quartz, Granite, Laminate, Corian and Wood

Most countertop damage looks worse than it is. A chipped quartz edge by the dishwasher, a cracked strip of granite in front of the cooktop, a peeling laminate edge or a burn on a Corian top can usually be repaired so it stops growing and blends in. The real question is whether the surface is the problem or the structure underneath, because no cosmetic fix holds on a top that is moving or wet.
This guide covers what can be repaired on each material, what repair and refinishing kits from stores like Home Depot and Lowe's can and cannot do, why seams separate, what drives countertop repair cost, and how to decide between countertop refinishing vs replacement.
Repair, refinish or replace: a quick guide by material
Start with the material and the kind of damage. Local damage on a sound top is a repair; worn or dated surfaces on sound structure are a refinish; water-damaged substrate or cracks through the top usually mean replacement.
| Material | Repairable well | Usually visible after repair | Points to replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quartz | Edge and sink chips | Cracks, scorch marks | Cracks across the top |
| Granite | Chips, pits, small cracks | Little; pattern hides fills | Unsupported cracked strips |
| Laminate or Formica | Loose edges, small chips | Deep scratches, burns | Swollen substrate |
| Corian or solid surface | Scratches, stains, light burns | Rarely | Rarely needed |
| Wood or butcher block | Scratches, water marks | Deep black stains | Rot near the sink |
Can a quartz countertop be repaired?
Yes, in most cases. Chips on the front edge or around the sink are the most common quartz damage, and they are filled with a tinted epoxy or acrylic adhesive, cured, then shaped and polished to the edge profile. On a speckled or mid-tone quartz a good repair is hard to spot; on solid white or a pattern with long veins it is usually visible up close, because the fill cannot copy the pattern.
Quartz countertop cracks
A hairline crack can be stabilized with a penetrating resin so it does not grow or collect dirt, but the line usually remains visible. A crack that crosses the whole top, or one with pieces at different heights, often points to a support problem underneath, which needs fixing before or instead of a cosmetic repair.
Scorch marks
Burns from hot pans are damage to the resin and generally cannot be fully removed.
Quartz countertop repair kits
Kits sold at Home Depot and other stores contain clear or tintable adhesive and a razor or scraper for leveling. They work for small chips if you are patient with color matching. For an edge chip in a visible spot, a professional match usually looks better.
Before
AfterGranite: chips, pits and cracks
Granite is the most forgiving stone to repair, because natural variation hides the fill. Chips and pits are filled the same way as quartz. Fissures that are part of the stone are not cracks and do not need repair unless they open or catch a cloth.
A true crack, often near a sink cut-out or across a narrow strip in front of a cooktop, can be filled with resin, and the area should be checked for support. After any repair, reseal the surrounding stone.
Laminate and Formica: cracks, edges and scratches
Laminate is a thin decorative layer glued to particleboard or MDF, so every repair depends on the bond and the core. Small chips and scratches can be filled with laminate repair paste or a color-matched seam filler, which is how laminate countertop scratch repair kits from Home Depot and Lowe's work. Deep scratches through the pattern will always show to some degree.
How to repair a cracked laminate countertop
Check the substrate first. If the particleboard is swollen from water, the crack will keep moving and the section usually needs replacing. If it is dry and solid, fill the crack with a matching filler and level it.
How to repair a laminate countertop edge
A peeling edge strip can often be reglued with contact cement or replaced with new edge banding, then filed flush with a laminate trimmer or file.
- Peeling edge with dry substrate: reglue with contact cement and clamp or roll.
- Missing edge piece: replace the strip with matching or contrasting laminate.
- Swollen, soft substrate near the sink: a repair will not last; replace that section.
- Burn or deep gouge: fill and accept a visible spot, or cover with a coating kit.
Corian and solid surface: burns, scratches and cracks
Solid surface, such as Corian, is the most repairable countertop because the color runs all the way through. Scratches, stains and light burn marks sand out.
Cracks, deep chips and Corian countertop refinishing kits
Cracks and deep chips can be routed out and filled, or a damaged section can be cut out and a new piece glued in with matching adhesive, which a solid surface fabricator sands to an almost invisible joint. Corian countertop refinishing kits are mostly abrasive pads and polish for renewing a dull or scratched surface across the whole top.
- Sand the burn markWork the spot with progressively finer abrasives until the mark is gone.
- Blend the surrounding areaFeather out from the spot so there is no visible dip or halo.
- Match the sheenUse Micro Mesh or similar graded pads to bring the area to the same matte, satin or gloss as the rest of the top.
Before
AfterWood countertops: how to refinish a wood countertop
Butcher block and other wood tops are renewed by sanding, and the depth of sanding follows the damage. Light scratches and dull spots need only a light sanding and a fresh coat of the same finish. Dark water marks, knife scores and burns need sanding to clean wood through the grits, then fresh oil or a film finish. Black stains near the sink often mean water has gone deep into the wood, and they may not sand out completely.
Match the new finish to the old one. An oiled top takes more oil; a top finished with polyurethane or varnish needs the same type, or a full strip to bare wood if you want to switch. Our countertop care guide covers wood finish options in more detail.
Why is my countertop seam separating?
A seam that opens or develops a ridge almost always has a cause underneath it. Fix the cause first, or the seam will open again.
- Cabinets that have settled, or were not level when the top was set.
- Missing support under the seam, or an overhang without brackets.
- Seam adhesive that has failed or shrunk.
- Heavy point loads, such as someone sitting on the counter near the joint.
- On laminate, water getting into the seam and swelling the particleboard, the most common cause.
How a stone seam is fixed
The seam is reopened, the pieces are pulled level with a seam setter and the joint is refilled with color-matched epoxy. If it keeps opening, the cabinets or supports are checked and corrected.
DIY countertop refinishing kits: what they do and do not do
Countertop refinishing kits coat an existing top, usually laminate, with a new surface. They are a reasonable way to buy time on sound laminate and the wrong tool for stone.
Mineral coatings such as Daich SpreadStone
Daich SpreadStone Mineral Select is troweled or rolled on in layers, sanded and sealed to look like stone, with light shades like natural white and darker ones like onyx.
Rust-Oleum and epoxy kits
Rust-Oleum sells countertop coating kits in light base and tintable versions with a satin or gloss finish. Epoxy kits pour a self-leveling clear or tinted coat over the old surface.
What reviews agree on
Reviews, including SpreadStone countertop finishing kit reviews, tend to agree: results depend on surface prep, patience between coats and good ventilation, and the coating is softer than real stone, so it can scratch or wear at the sink and the edge. Kits do not fix swollen substrate, failing seams or damaged edges, which need repair first.
- Sound, dated laminate: a refinishing kit can work well.
- Formica countertop with peeling edges: fix the edges first, then coat.
- Stone or quartz: coating kits are not the right tool; repair or restore instead.
Countertop repair cost and refinishing vs replacement
Countertop repair cost depends on the material, the number of spots, how visible they are and how hard the color is to match. The cost to repair a chip in a quartz countertop or a single granite chip is usually a small job. A quartz countertop crack repair, the cost to repair a crack in a granite countertop that needs support work, or a seam that must be releveled takes longer. Laminate countertop repair cost is often low for an edge reglue but may approach replacement when the substrate is swollen, and Corian countertop repair cost depends mainly on whether a section needs cutting in. Kitchen countertop refinishing cost covers more surface but uses less material than new tops. The only reliable number is a written estimate after someone sees the damage.
- Repair when the damage is local and the top is otherwise sound.
- Refinish when the whole surface is worn or dated but structure, edges and seams are fine, most often laminate, solid surface and wood.
- Replace when the substrate is water-damaged, the top is cracked through in several places, the layout is changing or new cabinets are going in.
When new cabinets are going in
In our experience, replacement is the better call here, because stone and laminate tops often do not survive removal and resetting undamaged.
