What makes a Hoffman Estates kitchen hard to use, and how we fix it

We rebuild kitchens so they keep working as needs change: for a wheelchair or walker user, for a parent moving in, or for Hoffman Estates homeowners planning to stay put for decades. Lower work surfaces, drawers instead of deep base shelves and appliances you can use without bending or reaching over heat.

Ranch homes ready for aging in place

Single-level 1970s ranches are well suited to aging in place. Updating the kitchen with reachable storage and safer appliances is often the biggest step.

No knee space at the sink

A sink base full of doors and pipes means washing up sideways. We open the space under the sink, use a shallower bowl and cover the pipes with a removable panel.

Dishwasher and microwave at awkward heights

We set appliances at heights the user can reach: dishwasher drawers or a raised dishwasher, a microwave drawer and a fridge with the freezer below.

Not enough room to turn around

Narrow aisles and an island in the wrong place trap a wheelchair. We redraw the layout so there is room to approach, turn and back out.

Slippery floors and thresholds

We remove thresholds where we can and use flooring with good traction underfoot and easy rolling for wheels.

Wall cabinets out of reach

Most upper cabinets sit above a comfortable reach for a seated user. We lower some, fit pull-down racks in others and shift daily dishes below the counter.

Hard-to-turn knobs and faucet handles

Small knobs, tight faucets and toggle switches all need pinching or twisting. We replace them with loop pulls, lever faucets and large rocker switches.

Deep base cabinets you have to kneel into

Base cabinets with doors and fixed shelves are the hardest storage to use. We replace them with deep drawers and roll-out trays.

Accessible Kitchen Remodeling questions from Hoffman Estates homeowners

How do you make a kitchen wheelchair accessible?
The essentials are clear floor space at each work area, room to turn, a lowered work surface and sink with knee space, reachable storage and controls, and appliances with doors that open out of the way.
Do I need a permit?
Often yes, if the sink drain moves or new circuits are added. We check the village's rules and handle the application.
Can you make only part of the kitchen accessible?
Yes. Many projects add one lowered work area, a knee-space sink, pull-down storage and a wall oven while keeping the rest of the kitchen as it is.
What does an accessible kitchen remodel cost?
It depends on how much changes: moving plumbing for a knee-space sink, adding a wall oven, new cabinets and any doorway or floor work. We give a written, itemized estimate after the visit.
How long does an accessible kitchen remodel take?
Often several weeks on site once cabinets and appliances arrive. Plumbing moves and doorway changes add time; we give a written schedule first.
Does accessible kitchen remodel need a Hoffman Estates building permit, and who files it?
Permits go through Development Services Department - Code Enforcement (Building Permits) (BS&A Online Permit Portal), phone (847) 781-2631. When your scope needs one, we prepare the application and schedule the inspections.
Hoffman Estates contractor registration: do kitchen contractors need it?
Contractors must register through a BS&A Online Contractor account (annual registration form and documents) and submit the Contractor/Design Professionals Registration Form and a Workers Compensation Affidavit. No fee stated. We take care of that before work starts.
Do I need a permit for accessible kitchen remodel in Hoffman Estates?
It depends on the scope. Hoffman Estates's rule in short: Kitchen remodels go through the Residential Remodel permit: submit plans (1/4 inch scale) of existing and proposed kitchen showing plumbing fixtures, outlets, appliances and panel, plus a scope of work or contract. We handle the permit when one is needed with Development Services Department - Code Enforcement (Building Permits).
Do you work in my part of Hoffman Estates?
Yes. Our crews work across Hoffman Estates — ZIP 60192, 60169, 60120, 60010 — and nearby Schaumburg, Hanover Park, Palatine.
