Moving the microwave off the counter
Getting the microwave off the counter usually means an over-the-range unit or a drawer model in a base cabinet. We tell you what each needs before you pick.

Over-the-range, drawer and built-in microwaves installed in Elgin: anchored into the wall, bolted to the cabinet and vented the right way.
An over-the-range microwave is heavy, hangs in front of a hot cooktop and doubles as the exhaust fan, so how it's hung matters. In Elgin we fasten the wall plate into studs, bolt the top through the cabinet, set the blower for your vent path and check the outlet before the unit goes up.

Every maker lists a minimum distance from the cooktop to the bottom of the microwave. If the cabinet is too low, a low-profile model or a cabinet change may be the answer.
Drawer models need an exact opening, support underneath and a receptacle where the drawer won't hit it. We set all three before sliding the unit in.
A countertop model can look built in when it goes into a wall cabinet with the maker's trim kit. We cut or size the opening so the trim covers it cleanly.
The exhaust opening on a new microwave may sit inches away from the old hood duct. We fit a transition piece or adjust the opening so air moves without leaks.
If there's a duct through the wall or roof, we set the blower to exhaust outside, which clears steam and cooking smells better. With no duct, the unit recirculates through a charcoal filter.
Makers usually call for a dedicated circuit and an outlet in the upper cabinet. Where the kitchen lacks it, the wiring is added first and the microwave goes up after.
An air-fryer microwave over the range does more work than a basic one. If the outlet shares a circuit with the counter, an electrician separates it.

Installed
DetailThe site: a two-story colonial from the 1990s near Downtown. What we started with: white appliances. What bothered the owners most: a weak hood and a microwave stuck on the counter. Finished kitchen: a new over-the-range microwave installed above the range and vented. The job covered old unit or hood removed, studs located and wall plate mounted, plus cabinet drilled to the template.

AfterThe site: a 1980s two-story in St. Charles. What we started with: almond appliances. The main complaint was a decades-old hood and a microwave crowding the counter. After: a new over-the-range microwave installed above the range and vented. On site this meant studs located and wall plate mounted, cabinet drilled to the template, plus drawer and built-in cutouts.
